Public transport in Saint Petersburg

There are various kinds of transport to travel around the city. Underground railway, buses, trams, trolleybuses are at your disposal.

Underground railway is a convenient way to get where you need. There are 5 lines there. To take the train you need to buy a token and put it into the slot on the turnstile. One token costs 45 roubles, you can take any line and change for any other line - the price is the same. Also there are different kinds of tickets (7 days - 10 trips, 15 days - 20 trips, 30 days - 40 trips, 90 days - 70 trips).

The only possible disadvantage is that there are not so many stations throughout the city, so when you go out of the underground you may need to take the bus or something else to get to your destination. It doesn't apply so much to the city centre, where underground stations are rather widely distributed.

Another type of transport is the bus. There are a lot of buses in Saint Petersburg. The bus fare is 40 roubles. The ticket can be used once. You buy it when you get on a bus, there is a ticket seller in each one. There are tickets for 90 minutes(one trip by underground and unlimited by bus, tram, trolleybus), 1 day, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 days. These tickets are available for underground, bus, trolleybus, tram. You can buy them in underground cashdesks.

The next possibility to travel around the city is the tram. There are much less tram routes than bus routes in St Petersburg, the ticket price is the same - 40 roubles.

The trolleybus is one more type of transport used in Saint Petersburg. The price is again 40 roubles.

You may also be interested to know that there is another kind of transport there - it is called "marshrutka" and in fact it is a minibus. You will find them in all parts of the city. The ticket price is different on each route, but generally it is a little higher than normal bus fare. You buy it from the driver. To get out of "marshrutka" you need to ask the driver to stop at the station you want. It is different from other types of transport, which stop at every station on the route.

If you want to have a city sightseeing tour, there are special red double-decker buses. The route takes 2 hours, they go daily from 9 am to 6 pm. The price is 700 roubles.

There is an alternative way to pay for the use of public transport in Saint Petersburg, if you don't want to bother with buying the ticket each time you need to travel somewhere. It is e-card "Podorozhnik". It gives the opportunity to use any kind of city transport. The card itself costs 60 roubles, you just top up the card balance with the money you will need for travelling by public transport. You can do it at any metro cashdesk or at an e-terminal on any subway station. To pay for your trip you just need to put the card to the payment card reader. "Podorozhnik" is valid 3 years from the date of purchase or from the date of recharging the balance.

There is also "Saint Petersburg card", which gives tourists the opportunity of free entrance to various museums (around 60) and tours (buses and boats), use of public transport (though, you need to top up the balance, as on "Podorozhnik" card). There are different "Saint Petersburg cards", you may choose the card that best meets your requirements. The price will vary - from 3200 to 5500 roubles.
